I wrote my first poem when I was ten. I needed an outlet to express myself in a very scary and dysfunctional home environment. Writing has helped me ever since to not only navigate the world but also to know and understand myself and others at a much deeper level. ON THE WINGS OF A HAWK

After the Twin Towers are struck by two airplanes, killing thousands and injuring many more in New York, on September 11, 2004, Kevin (Lucys’ husband) crashes through the front door and announces that he’s going to sign up and fight for his country.

Lucinda “Lucy” hits a wall the day she watches the bus pull away from Walmart, carrying her husband and many of the young men away from Durango, Colorado to fight and kill “those bastards”. Most of the young men had never heard of Afghanistan or fought in a war where they would be given guns and ordered to kill. None of them could fathom what was to come.

Lucy is all alone now and falls into a deep grief, burying herself in the little house she and Kevin shared. Her best friend, Concha, has had enough of Lucy’s wallowing in her tears, and early one morning, she bangs on Lucy’s door demanding that Lucy let her in. When Lucy finally opens the door, Concha tromps in and takes over. “You have to get up, eat something and make a list. The first thing on the list is look for a job.

Lucy is thrilled when she reads the ad in the local newspaper. A nanny. For three children. When she calls the woman, they set up an interview for the next day and Lucy is hired on the spo.t She instantly falls in love with the kids, and they with her. For the first time since Kevin left, she feels something new; she feels hope.

After working for the Singletons for several months, she gets a call late one night. Kevin has been seriously injured and is fighting for his life. Her world is turned upside down when her husband comes home and is a paraplegic, severly depressed and entirely unvotivated for do anything to get better. Lucy’s world is turned upside down as she tries to keep all the pieces together.

But, then things get weird, so weird that Concha fears for Lucy’s life and soul. That’s when Concha realizes it’s time for her to accept her uncle's calling to learn the ‘Blessing Way,’ the way of her people. She begins traveling regularly to the Navajo Reservation to work with her uncle, a shaman and healer. Lucy is starting to have accidents, serious ones, often with the kids in the car.. Concha prays that she’s not too late to save Lucy and the kids.

What follows is a gripping tale of love, loss, and survival in the darkest of times. It’s a story that will steal your heart and make you want to be friends with Lucy and Concha forever.
